Lorrie Matheson's

A Dime at a Time
Western Famine/Saved by Radio

A Dime

Some CDs can’t get out of the player fast enough; others stick around longer, casting a spell. Lorrie Matheson’s A Dime at a Time belongs in the latter category.

Matheson is a veteran of the Calgary music scene, having put in time in bands like Fire Engine Red and National Dust. This, his self-produced, second solo CD, is a folksy offering with touches of analog electronica. The songs are well-crafted; catching the listener’s ear the first time, but nuanced enough to reward repeated listening.

Lyrically, Matheson channels Elvis Costello via the Cash Brothers, mixing acerbic and touching moments in equal amounts. If there's any justice, the poppy ‘Gun Metal Grey’ would be in regular rotation at Edge 102.

Quibbles? A few. Having two songs in the same key, side-by-side on a CD, is not a good idea. When they’re the first and second songs, that's even worse. But that’s a minor quibble. A Dime at a Time is a very good CD from a singer/songwriter who deserves greater exposure.
