Music with no affiliation
A night with no rehearsals, no set changes, no sound check
By Antoine Tedesco
No Affiliation, the brainchild of Marco DiFelice, singer/songwriter and frontman for Toronto’s Supergarage, plans to create a night of musical mayhem at Drake Hotel (1150 Queen St. W.) on Wed. Oct. 12, 10 pm.
After sending a few email questions to various musicians who plan to lend their talents to the night, it seems anything and everything has equal opportunity of happening...
For a mere $7, a dozen or so musicians will take the stage and create what DiFelice sees as a show filled with, “a lot of mistakes, beautiful mistakes. A lot of risk taking. A lot of audience particip-action.”
The mission is to take away habits and comfort zones, pulling the audience into the world being created on stage. No rehearsals, no set changes, no sound check. The notion can make some musicians uneasy, but with nothing expected except a good time and some interesting musical creations DiFelice and others are not that concerned about the outcome.
DiFelice has invited a real cross-section of musicians to meld into each other. The Ugly Bug Band’s big band ska sound mixing into the ambient acoustics of DeFelice or the punk-influenced sounds of Antimatter’s Geoff Marshall will surely create some odd blends as musicians hand each other the baton.
DiFelice thinks one of the strangest hand-offs will be, “Corin Raymond to Ugly Bug Band. Corin’s songs are so stripped and honest, the transition of classic songwriting to a fun, quirky band will be interesting...”
On the rooster you’ll get to see DiFelice, Corin Raymond, Greg Hobbs, Michael "Rosie" Rosenthal, Marty Stelnick, Geoff Marshall, Scott Good, Michael "Blitz" Kaler, The Ugly Bug Band, Hugh Oliver, DJ Shine and more...
This is DeFelice’s baby so he will definitely be hyped, but what are other musicians saying about what they hope to see that night? We thought it a good idea to ask:
Michael “Blitz” Kaler of The Ugly Bug Band thinks “it will be an alternative to the usual set format of things, and will give the audience a chance to get a sampling of all kinds of stuff in a brief space of time. Should be good for whetting appetites. It also brings out the community aspect of the Toronto musical scene, which is especially nice – it's a bit more realistic in terms of how we work together and help each other out.
“Planning to a certain degree is good, and necessary, but you need to leave space for improv and spontaneous creativity,” continued Kaler, “because there are huge sections of people's coolness that only come out when unstructured space is set up for them.”
One more interview was necessary, so we contacted singer/songwriter, guitarist/producer Geoff Marshall, and member of Antimatter and The Retiring Gentlemen who kept his answers short and sweet:
“It will be a fever dream stalking your brain for days."
What more needs to be said? Nothing! If you have the time, head out and drop your $7, it will definitely be worth it.
