Scritti Politti
Early Rough Trade Records
This collection of re-issued recordings from the 1980s Britpop band Scritti Politti – aptly titled Early – is a stroll down memory lane for aged fans of the former club chart topper.
As the album title suggests, this CD comprises the trio’s earliest recordings (from 1978 to 1980); it is the stuff of taut, experimental, rhythmic displacements, and before the polished commercial hit heydays of songs like ‘The Perfect Way’. Early regurgitates songs that at one time were likely considered avant-garde such as the opening track ‘Skank Bloc Bologna’ or the sporadic ‘Bibbly-o-Tek’.
On one hand, this disc is interesting in that it exposes the formative years of electronically made music. Scritti Politti produced a rougher, grittier version of electro-pop versus the likes of 1980s Depeche Mode a la Speak & Spell. On the other, unless you’re a fan of this group’s work, or of the genre’s roots, chances are you might find this CD to be a little too retro for its’ own good.
Nevertheless, there’s no disputing ‘Doubt Beat’ and ‘Lions After Lumber’ can get you bobbing your head to the registered beat.
