Brakes
Give Blood Rough Trade/Sanctuary Records
The Brakes are mediocre at best and here are three reasons why:
1) They completely miss the mark on the nouveau bluegrass sound because; 2) The production quality isn’t very good, which you can let slide since it’s really a first effort; 2b) Their lead singer, British Sea Power’s Eamon Hamilton, just plain can’t sing, and since this isn’t a boy band, he can’t fall back on his looks either; and finally 3) The lyrics are downright pedestrian; just listen to ‘The Most Fun’ to hear all three of these lovely points in action.
‘Heard About Your Band’ sounded just okay this morning when I was still half asleep, and the sweetness of ‘You’re So Pretty’ might win you over if you were drunk and half watching it performed live. If we had a rating system out of five, Give Blood gets two very middle-of-the-road stars.
