Roll Bounce

Rated: PG, Fox Seachlight Pictures
Directed by Malcom D. Lee
Cast: Bow Wow, Chi McBride, Mike Epps, Wesley Jonathan

Roll Bounce

Saturday Night Fever meets You Got Served on roller skates.

Rapper and hip-hop heart throb, Bow Wow plays Xavier (a.k.a. X). He is part of a group of young bloods growing up on the South side of Chicago in 1978. When the local roller skating rink closes, X and his crew head over to the more affluent North side to skate at the Sweetwater roller rink. Here they become instant rivals with current Sweetwater skating champions Sweetness and his crew.

On the home front X is dealing with personal issues including first love, the death of his mother, and a father too caught up in his own pain and problems to spend time with him and his little sister.

For anybody over 30 who remembers the 70s with the Atari system and the disco ball you’ll get a kick out of the old school music and groovy outfits including high-waisted bellbottom pants.

Nick Cannon plays Be- nard, a Jimmy Hendrix look a like who runs the skate rental counter. Wesley Jonathan plays the irresistible, full of himself, Sweetness, who challenges X to a winner-take-all skate-off showdown.

It’s a cute coming of age movie with a likable bunch of characters and some impressive skating moves. Younger audiences will enjoy seeing Bow Wow and we older folks can enjoy reminiscing over the boogie oogie oogie tunes and striped tube socks.
