Dish

By Marion Kane
Whitecap Books, 304 pages, $24.95

Dish

Marion Kane has worked for The Toronto Star for 16 years, first as food editor and then as a food columnist. In that time she has explored virtually every kind of food there is - not to mention every kind of chef.

Dishis a compilation of some of Kane’s best columns, as well as some of her memories involving food. Throughout it’s pages, she “dishes” about a multi-ethnic potluck dinner courtesy of her 15-year-old daughter and friends; she offers advice on what to do with leftovers, and shares tales about the Canadian origins of the MacIntosh apple, how Toronto was introduced to Pad Thai, and how Kane herself is related to “Joe” of “cup o‚ joe” fame.

The book also includes Kane’s meetings with some famous - and in one case, infamous - people, including Julia Child, Woody Harrelson, and former mafia cook Joe “Dogs” Iannuzi, whom she interviewed while he was in the witness protection program.

And the best part is, along with all these great anecdotes are even better recipes to try. Highly recommended is Marion’s cheesecake with berry glaze, on pages 38 and 39, respectively.

There’s just one way to sum up this book: Mmmm good!
